Volunteer role: Library Assistant
Responsible to: Care Navigator Manager
Time commitment: 2 - 4 hours a week, flexible times, and days of the week to be confirmed with the Care Navigator Manager. Attendance at volunteer support meetings. All our volunteer roles are from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. We are closed at weekends, public holidays and over the Christmas period.
Location: Frailty Rehabilitation Ward, Churchill Ward, First Floor, Orpington Hospital, Sevenoaks Road, BR6 9LU.
About Our Care Navigation Service, Frailty Pathway: Age UK Bromley and Greenwich Care Navigation Service works collaboratively with Kings NHS MDT Stakeholder partners within the Kings NHS Frailty model in Bromley. This service is based at the Orpington Hospital site on the Churchill and Elizabeth wards and provides an integrated care multi-disciplinary team person centred approach.
Role Summary: Providing admin and organisational support with the Voluntary Sector Information Library.
What will I be involved in?
- Co-facilitate the organisation of the voluntary sector information library, which includes ordering, stock control, keeping the library regularly updated.
- Researching the voluntary sector and community services to add relevant information to the library. Being proactive in the library’s growth and development to include Croydon and Bexley voluntary sector services.
- Organising deliveries of updated library information to arrive and ensuring that this is stored in the appropriate location.
- Liasing with office volunteers to facilitate hospital info pack deliveries and ensuring that these are readily available.
- Review and maintain stock controls of Age UK Bromley and Greenwich stationary supplies including compliment slips and letterheads, service booklets etc.
- Where required, photocopying resources needed.
What skills and qualities will I need to have?
- Enjoys spending time with and talking with older people aged 50+ from a wide range of backgrounds in a hospital setting.
- Be a good listener and have empathy with older people, being approachable and welcoming.
- Interested in learning and developing new skills required of the role.
- Good organisational skills and a knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel packages
- Comfortable working in a hospital setting as part of a team and at times lone working.
- At all times volunteer in accordance with the organisation’s policies regarding Health & Safety, Equality & Diversity, Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and Confidentiality & Data Protection. Lone working.
- Being able to maintain client confidentiality, understand the importance of keeping within the parameters of the hospital role and have a good understanding of GDPR and Data Protection

Other information: Prospective volunteers will complete a recruitment process and be required to provide details of two references and agree to submit details for and undertake an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) check. All our volunteer roles are 18+, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Age UK Bromley & Greenwich will reimburse all expenditure reasonably incurred. Receipts to be provided with expenditure claims.
