Age UK Plymouth is seeking to appoint new Trustees to its Board.

Are you passionate about helping older people and their carers in and around the City of Plymouth to improve their quality of life through the promotion of choice, opportunity and independence?

Can you commit to working with an amazing team of staff and volunteers towards the vision of ‘Loving Later Life in Plymouth’?

Then  consider joining our Trustee Board and help us shape Age UK Plymouth’s future. It’s an incredibly exciting time for the charity as we develop new and enhance our existing services.

About Age UK Plymouth

Age UK Plymouth is an independent local Charity and a brand partner of the national charity Age UK.  We have been operating for 80 years in the City of Plymouth, proudly supporting those in later life, tackling inequalities and isolation.

We do that through a range of services which include:

- Help at Home and Community Support service

- Adult Day Centre

- Dementia Day Centre

- Information and Advice service

- Active Living Services

- Support for Carers

- Community Gateway

- Veteran’s Support

- Providing discharge support for patients from Mount Gould Hospital and for guests from the Short-Term Care Centre based in our building at Mount Gould.

We are constantly reviewing the needs of older people in Plymouth and always looking to adopt or adapt service to best achieve our objectives.

We have an incredible team of staff and volunteers all committed to the needs of older people in Plymouth.  The challenges faced by older people are wide-ranging.  Now more than ever before, Age UK Plymouth finds itself at the centre of these challenges and the City’s response.  We need more dedicated Trustees to help us achieve our aims.

What will you be doing?

As a Trustee you will work in partnership with your fellow Trustees and the Chief Executive to agree the long-term vision and the strategic objectives of the charity.  Your role as Trustee is also to ensure that the Charity complies with the necessary charitable and company governance frameworks.

You will attend Board meetings (once a quarter) and will be encouraged to join either the Finance and Investment Committee or the Services, Quality and Safety Committee (each Committee meeting twice a year).  There is also an annual strategy away-day as well as an AGM.

For each meeting you will need to devote time to reading and understanding the relevant Board papers and in meetings we encourage you to have your voice heard.  Bring your experience and passion to the charity and help us deliver on our mission.

Who are we looking for?

We welcome applicants from any background who have a commitment and passion for Age UK Plymouth and its mission, are collegiate in approach and want to make Plymouth a great place for later life.

In our commitment to developing a diverse board of Trustees, we especially welcome applicants from the LGBTQ+ community.  We’d also welcome applicants who are under 40 years old.

Whilst we are particularly interested in applications from those with a background from the list below, we would also welcome applicants with a variety of professional and lived experience:

  • Human Resources
  • Marketing and/or Communications
  • Fundraising
  • IT and Digital
  • Dementia Care
  • Property and/or Facilities Management

This is a voluntary post (as with all Trustees) but all reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Benefits of being a Trustee

Being a Trustee is a challenging and rewarding experience.  You will have the opportunity to make a real difference to those in later life.  You will have the chance to gain new skills, have boardroom experience and expand your network.  You will have development opportunities and the chance to attend regional and national events.
