World Alzheimer's Day At The Dementia Day Centre

Published on 04 October 2024 08:37 AM

World Alzheimer's Day, which takes place ever September 21st, is a global effort to raise awareness and challenge the stigma around Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

Our Dementia Day Centre celebrated World Alzheimer’s Day with a fun filled afternoon and family members were invited to come along to join in and be part of the celebrations. The afternoon included games and live entertainment where performances were filled with songs throughout the decades.

“Our Dementia Day Centre provides care for people with memory loss, cognitive issues and all stages of dementia. We understand that a diagnosis of any illness can be difficult for both the person and their carers, therefore it is key we include families when we hold events like this, after all, they are also living with dementia.” - Tracy Walker, Head of Day Centres.

We were also joined by local Councillor, Daniel Steel of Plymstock Radford. Recently, Councillor Steel visited our Dementia Day Centre where he had an opportunity to have a cup of tea and chat to discuss why the care and support we offer is so important to the lives of those living with dementia in Plymouth. We want to say a huge thank you to Daniel and the many other Councillors across the city who, collectively, have donated £2,550 to our Dementia Day Centre, supporting those who are vulnerable in our communities.

“The Dementia Day Centre benefits my husband as he’s able to join in with activities and interact with others. He is quiet at home and doesn’t talk a lot, however at the Day Centre, he is able to talk to many different people, engaging in different conversations. I know he is safe when he is here and this puts my mind at ease, but it also provides respite for me.”

Age UK Plymouth wants to thank each and every person who came along to our celebration, we hope everyone had a really special time.
