When you reach the top of the stairs, you’ll need to swivel the seat to get off safely. We provide two options:
Manual swivel: you use the handles to move the seat
Powered swivel: you use the seat controls to move automatically.
To make sure the staircase is clear for other users, the footplate and seat can be folded up. There are two options:
Manual footplate: Our easy-fold mechanism lets you fold the plate up and down by hand.
Powered footplate: Use a switch in the seat arm, or a plate that folds with the seat.
All stairlifts come with two remote controls – one to leave upstairs and the other downstairs. This lets you move your stairlift without sitting on it, parking it where you want or calling it like a lift.
We know that not all staircases are the same, so we have created different types of track, depending on your circumstances.
Some houses have a door near the bottom of the stairs, so we can fit a hinged track to avoid blocking the door. These hinged tracks come in two options
Manual hinge: A manual-hinged track means you’ll need to raise and lower the track by hand. However the hinges are designed to make this as easy as possible.
Powered hinge: Some of the stairlifts featured in this brochure are available with anautomatic hinged track – your technical surveyor will be able to show you which ones.
These stairlifts will lift or lower the track automatically when it’s in use. When you’re not using your stairlift, the track can be folded simply by holding a button on your remote control.
If you’re having a straight stairlift, it can be fitted with a slide track. This means you won’t need a hinged track as it moves up and down the staircase at the same time as the seat.
Just like the powered hinge, the slide track works automatically when your stairlift is activated.
The slide track is slightly shorter than your staircase so this means the track will move with you.
The slide track is also fitted with safety sensors at either end to halt the track if it encounters an obstacle during use.
Your seat will move towards the obstacle where, if it’s safe to do so, you can remove it and continue on your way.
Alternatively, the track and stairlift can be moved away from the obstacle. A trained surveyor will be able to advise you on which track will work best for you and your home.
If you have a straight staircase, there are three stairlifts to choose from. The Simplicity stairlift is ideal for narrow staircases and is very cost-effective, while the Age UK 1000 stairlift offers a range of additional features.
Every stairlift complies with British and European standards and is ISO quality-approved, so you can be certain that, whichever you choose, it will be safe and reliable.
If your staircase turns corners, or spirals, you will need a curved stairlift. The following curved stairlifts are made to order after a survey of your individual staircase.
Below are a few of the questions customers often ask about Age UK Stairlifts – we hope the answers will be helpful for you.

It is an extremely common misconception that our stairlifts are installed on a wall. This is not the case. The stairlift will be installed on the staircase itself. The technical surveyor will advise which side of the stairs will be most convenient for the stairlift to be installed on.
If the stairs are straight it will normally take around 2–3 hours. If the stairs are curved then it will take half a day.
Our stairlifts are designed to operate to the speed governed by British Standards. This is equivalent to a gentle walking pace.
We do not repurchase stairlifts as the product is bespoke to you and your property. We can however remove the stairlift free of charge if the stairlift is under three years old. We can also advise on how to help resell the stairlift privately to either an individual you know or a mobile company.
Your local authority provides information on Disabled Facilities Grants and is obliged to give you this if your circumstances fit the criteria. You can pick up an application form from your local authority. Please note timescales from one area of the country to another may vary and this is a means-tested service.
Yes – the best time to replace your carpets is before the installation takes place; however this can be completed after installation if necessary. A price guide for this service is £250 if the removal and refit is completed on the same day and £350 if it involves removal and reinstallation on two separate days.
The service provided doesn’t end at installation.
Our experience at The Age UK Group has been an important influence on the features and benefits of the stairlifts, but the real difference is the quality of care and level of personal attention and respect customers receive from Handicare.
Survey and installation appointments are scheduled to suit you, and no one will call without an appointment. You will be in control and be kept informed throughout the decision-making and buying processes, and expert mobility advisers are on hand to assist if you have any concerns or questions.
Because we know how important your stairlift is to your independence, Handicare places special value on after-sales care. Handicare offers a full maintenance programme, ensuring that your stairlift delivers outstanding service at all times. In the unlikely event of a breakdown a local engineer will be with you within 24 hours. The engineering team are available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
If once your stairlift is installed you decide it is not suitable for your purposes, please let us know within 14 days of the installation date. We may then, at our discretion, carry out additional works or alterations to address the issues raised. If after completion of such works you are not satisfied and you still wish to return your stairlift you should then confirm your decision to us in writing. On receipt of such notice we will arrange a full refund and make arrangements to remove the stairlift during normal working hours.
Please note, however, that we cannot guarantee fully to make good all works to your property carried out during the installation process and that this offer does not apply in the event of bereavement when we will not buy back goods from you. This offer does not affect your statutory rights.
