Pensioners act now to save money next winter

Published on 25 March 2025 01:57 PM

It has been a tough winter for many local pensioners and every day at Age UK Wyvern we talk to people making difficult decisions about how to stretch incomes further.

This year, many of the people we help were hit by changes to Winter Fuel Payments. For the first time, only those in receipt of Pension Credit qualified for the £200 or £300 award.

Our staff know it can make all the difference for vulnerable people trying to work out if they can afford to keep the heating on. Like thousands of others across the country, numerous Worcestershire pensioners tried to apply for Pension Credit, but it can be difficult to navigate application forms, especially for those without access to the internet.

The Information and Advice Team at Age UK Wyvern can help people work out if they are eligible for Pension Credit and talk them through the application process. It is a lifeline for people who need the money to help with mounting household costs but are daunted by the idea of applying for a benefit. It is too late to qualify for Winter Fuel Payments for this winter, but people who successfully apply for Pension Credit now should be eligible for a Winter Fuel Payment in the autumn of 2025.

Our Information and Advice Manager, Sarah Turner, commented on the problems our clients are facing,

“We know that many pensioners are struggling to make ends meet, and sadly we do see people forced to choose between eating and heating.  Pension Credit helps older people on low incomes.  It tops up income, but can also lead to other benefits, such as the Winter Fuel payment and help with dental costs. We would encourage anyone wondering if they’re eligible for it, or any other pension age benefit, to contact us to arrange a benefit check."

FREE Home Energy Checks

Over the winter we’ve organised 450 home energy checks. Our friendly, professional team visit people worried about affording their heating bills to offer support and advice.

Where possible, they install free energy saving equipment such as draught excluders and night-lights and give out special Keep Warm packs to help clients face cold weather with more money in their pocket.
