PUBLIC STATEMENT REGARDING CORONAVIRUS – 27/03/2020
Statement from Jamie Anderson CEO Age UK Wirral:
If I had the time at the moment I would share some of the reflections of our staff, volunteers and the local people we are supporting. The truth is that I haven’t got the time to spare. My message tonight to everyone is that I can assure you all that we are doing anything and everything we can .... we are dealing with escalating demand daily - we currently have 4000+ people registered for support. We are proud to be part of Wirral and we are determined to do anything in our power to make the coming days, weeks and months that bit easier. We are there beside you every step of the way
PUBLIC STATEMENT REGARDING CORONAVIRUS – 24/03/2020
Statement from Jamie Anderson CEO Age UK Wirral:
‘Words will never express enough my gratitude to volunteers, staff and the public for their efforts thus far. Some of the phone calls we are receiving are devastating, and the impact your collective support is making is stunning. We will further increase our capacity tomorrow to respond to the volume of incoming calls. Please do not be concerned - I will do anything and everything in my power to be behind each and every person in Wirral to support you every step of the way. If you have registered to volunteer and not heard from us yet we still need you - we are trying to stretch such generous offers of help across the coming days and weeks that we are going to need such incredible levels of additional help and support’
PUBLIC STATEMENT REGARDING CORONAVIRUS – 16/03/2020
Statement from Jamie Anderson CEO Age UK Wirral:
In line with the Government’s latest advice earlier this evening, I have taken the decision to move Age UK Wirral to the next level of our escalation plan.
As a community, the situation that we are facing with regard to coronavirus is unprecedented. As an organisation, we play a major role within the health and social care system, and as a charity whose primary purpose is to support older people, one of the most vulnerable groups at the present time, we are working hard to ensure we can sustain as much vital support for local people as we can, whilst also adhering to the clinical and social guidance around minimising risks of exposure.
Government guidance is to limit face to face contacts where not essential, not to stop services completely, and therefore our approach is to maintain as much support as we can over the telephone or digitally.
Separate provision is in place for Stanhope Court, our Residential Care Home, and Devonshire Days, our day service for people with dementia. Specific letters will be sent on 17th March 2020 outlining the measures we are taking to ensure that these critical services are safeguarded for the foreseeable future.
Over the next 24 hours we will be temporarily suspending our social activities and home visits, and replacing them with wellbeing telephone calls or a digital offer. The purpose of this is to ensure that we can maximise our resources to support people who are self-isolating, This will comprise 4 key areas:
• Shopping
• Prescription collection
• Telephone befriending and wellbeing checks
• Digital activity
Anyone who requires additional support with the above areas of activity should contact the organisation on 0151 482 3456 to register their details.
Where our services have a direct impact on keeping people out of statutory services, or helping them to get home from hospital, upon advice from Wirral Council, we are maintaining these services with sensible and appropriate safeguards in place.
As a community, we are facing somewhat uncertain times but the raison d’etre of Age UK Wirral remains unchanged, and with resilience, determination and the best interests of local people at heart, we look forward to returning to our full portfolio of services and activities as soon as we possibly can.
With very best wishes and sincere thanks for your patience, support and understanding,
JAMIE ANDERSON
CHIEF EXECUTIVE
