Why is Dementia Friendly at the Light so popular?

“It’s the one thing on the calendar Edgar asks about all the time, ”says Magaret of her husband Edgar. “The whole thing is absolutely marvellous, the food, the staff, the film and the singing. It’s the whole package really. We tell all the carers in our other groups about it as it’s a great day out with lots of support available too."
Having Dementia, or caring for someone with Dementia, does not stop people wanting to do the things they have always enjoyed, such as going to the cinema. That is why the Dementia Friendly Screenings at The Light cinema in New Brighton are so popular with carers and their loved ones.
Why not join us?
Every second Thursday of the month, the Light cinema makes this afternoon a very special treat for those that attend. Not only are ticket prices extremely reasonable (£5 per person and carers go for free), but all guests can arrive an hour before the film and enjoy Pizza donated from local restaurant Prezzo, and drinks, cakes and other refreshments donated by Iceland.
During this hour people have the opportunity to talk with each other, make friends, and receive advice and support from Age UK Wirral’s Carer Support Service.
The films shown are old classics like White Christmas, the King & I and Father of the Bride. Singer Lilli Moore performs during the interval break. The Light cinema staff and volunteers have all had Dementia Awareness training, and are on hand to offer support or company when needed.
Margaret and Edgar (pictured above with Sid and Grace, with staff standing in the background) attend the screenings every month and thoroughly enjoy it.
