Age UK Horsham District calls for help as funding is hit during pandemic

Age UK Horsham District is experiencing losses of over £10,000 each month following the closure of its centre due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite this, the charity is needed more than ever before and has transformed its services, handling huge numbers of referrals to help vulnerable older people locally. Age UK Horsham District is urging the Government to step in with financial support as services are stretched.

The charity has already taken more than 1,000 new referrals and is now focused primarily on food and medication deliveries. It is also supporting those feeling lonely during isolation and has already made over 900 phone calls to those who need a friendly chat and a listening ear.

Age UK Horsham District is calling on the Government to provide it and other Age UK brand partners across the country with assistance at this time via a grant. This would come from funding already set aside to support charities. As Age UK supports one of the groups most affected by COVID-19, the organisation is urging MPs to ensure they benefit from this initiative.

Simon Dowe, Interim Chief Executive at Age UK Horsham District said “With our centre closed, we have had to close all our paid for services. We’re also unsure how long those over 70 will need to remain in lockdown, meaning this substantial loss of income could continue for months. We’re incredibly concerned about the wellbeing of older people at this time and the loneliness many are feeling - we’re needed more than ever. Our clients are so grateful for our help, some of them are overwhelmed or even in tears on the phone. Our staff and volunteers are working tirelessly, so I can only hope that the Government recognises that and offers us some financial support at this terrible time.”
