Brighter Together

It is looking bright this Spring as we begin a new intergenerational project at the Gwynneth Morgan Day Centre. We are excited to partner with the charity Brighter Together, who have made it possible for us to be matched with a local children’s nursery. The programme brings together older people with Early Years children for regular, activity-based sessions. These are proven to have mutual benefit to wellbeing, whilst also supporting the development of the children.
Brighter Together told us: “UK society is increasingly age segregated and there are stark and concerning generational gaps. Loneliness and depression are on the rise and the proportion of over 70s experiencing depression has doubled since the start of the pandemic. The leading cause of depression is social isolation and lack of purposeful activity. Children have less opportunity to have regular connections with over 65s, putting them at a disadvantage in terms of confidence, communication skills, concentration and school readiness.”
Brighter Together’s vision is one where every setting caring for older adults has a regular connection with children. At Age UK Wandsworth we are very proud to be part of this commitment and we cannot wait to welcome our first group of young guests!
