Sustainability September

Have you heard about the exclusive new residential development in Wandsworth’s East Hill with sustainability at its heart? The accommodation numbers just 3 units and has been carefully designed for a very exclusive clientele!

Our Growing Older Together Gardening Group and friends at Roehampton Community Shed have been constructing some new bug hotels for the garden at our Day Centre!

Members of the Roehampton Community Shed built the new bee and bug dwellings from upcycled materials in their Roehampton workshop. Our Community Engagement and Day Centre clients then fitted them out with lots of snuggly little places for all kinds of insects to bed down for the winter, using natural materials foraged from the garden. Our activities encourage clients to make use of donated and recycled materials whenever possible. Roehampton Community Shed is a group of likeminded people who get together once a week on a Wednesday to upcycle and repair stuff. Now in their 8th year the Roehampton Community Shed is also responsible for the creative planting schemes, installation of raised bed planters, and the planting of flowers and a vegetable patch on and around the Roehampton Estate.

We had a lot of fun practising our interior design skills using twigs, leaves and bamboo. We are grateful to Anthony and the members of Roehampton Community Shed for their generous help in building our bug hotels, bird boxes and garden planters and helping us do our bit for sustainability.

September also sees our Growing Older Together Gardening Group and Silver Strollers Walking Group getting involved in Seed Gathering Season. This initiative, led by The Tree Council, encourages everyone to join in gathering seeds, fruits and nuts and nurturing the trees of the future.

Beginning on the 23rd of September – the autumn equinox – Seed Gathering Season is the perfect start to autumn and is a great way to encourage people to start growing their own trees.

Just like the squirrels, we have begun to gather acorns and conkers during our walks across Wandsworth Common, as we look forward to the spectacular colours of autumn leaves.

Still on a green theme - we were delighted to receive donated houseplants, ferns and shrubs from Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Association after the championships, and a gift from Aruna and Nirmala, members of the Hindu Society of some scotch bonnet chilli pepper plants, which are soaking up the sunshine and rain (!) in our garden.
