Alison – Activity Volunteer
Our activities volunteers support our wide range of activities that take place at our Hub and in the community from walking football to our social and craft clubs.
How long have you been volunteering with Age UK Waltham Forest?
I started volunteering with Age UK Waltham Forest in February 2022.
What is your volunteer role and what does it involve?
As a Walking Football volunteer my role at the sessions is mainly to join in! As an experienced player, I also advise on the rules of the game and sometimes referee too. We aim to make the sessions friednly and inclusive. The sessions are enjoyable and socialable.
Why did you decide to get involved and volunteer with us?
I was made redundant from my teaching role in 2017 and since then have decided to try new things and step out of my comfort zone. In 2019 I saw a post on social media about women’s sessions run Leyton Orient Walking Football Club. I enjoy the game so much that I am very keen to spread the word about how enjoyable the game is. It is also great exercise! When I saw the advert asking for volunteers to support Age UK Walking Football I applied straight away.
What advice would you give to fellow volunteers?
If you are interested in volunteering I would say ‘Go for it!’ It can be so rewarding and such a lot of fun. It is a great way to make new friends and meet people with similar interests to you.
