Practical and emotional ways to cope with winter

The challenges of winter are something we face each year, but we want to let you know, we are here to help and to explain some of the support available locally.

Winter brings not only colder weather but also dark nights and short days.  Getting outside in these next few months can seem like a daunting task but it's important to keep up with exercise and social meetings whilst we can.

Getting Out

Taking a walk in the morning not only gives you the most daylight but can be a great time to have a chat with other walkers and dog owners who are often out and about first thing.  By exercising in the morning, you may experience the feeling of having more energy for the rest of your day and it means that you are not spending the day thinking of a walk as a task you need to complete.

You can find out more about the benefits of walking and other local exercise and social groups in our latest wellbeing newsletter here

Finances

You may be aware of the governments decision to reduce the winter fuel allowance from something all older people receive to just those on Pension Credit.  With our support, we have helped many people claim Pension Credit which then makes them eligible for winter fuel allowance, a free TV licence and much more.  If you’d like to chat with one of our support workers, please give us a call on 01977 552114.

Practical items

Preparing for bad weather is something we can all do.  Having a stock of tinned and long-life food items is a good idea in case leaving the house becomes difficult.  Frozen and tinned fruit and vegetable contain the same (if not better) levels of vitamins as fresh so can be an ideal way to stock up and save money too.

Wearing layers of clothes can keep you warmer than just one thick jumper. Vests and thermal clothing that sits close to you body is best for a base layer and stop drafts getting to your core.

Blankets across your lap and around shoulders are good for periods of time when you are sitting. We have been fortunate enough to have handmade blankets donated by talented knitters, if you would like to be considered for one of these free blankets, please get in touch on 01977 552114.

Hot water bottles and microwavable hotties are great for warming up beds just before getting in although you shouldn’t use a hot water bottle in a bed with an electric blanket.

Weathering a storm

To prepare for a power cut at home, you can have emergency items such as a torch, battery powered radio and fully charged mobile phone.  To find out more about power cuts, how to register as a priority member and how to contact Northern Powergrid, click here
