Some words from Step Out Lead - Terri
Hello, my name is Terri and I am proud to be involved with the Step-Out Service here at Age UK Wakefield District. Rather than simply managing the service, I consider it an honor to oversee it because our experienced staff and brave clients truly take ownership of the service and make it thrive.
The Step-Out Service holds a special place in my heart because it was the service that initially drew me to Age UK. Witnessing the dedication of our staff and the incredible transformation of our clients has been inspirational. From initially feeling anxious and isolated, our clients have now embraced their community, formed friendships, and engaged in regular outings. Some have even taken the initiative to run their own social groups or volunteer with AGE UK Wakefield District, giving back what they have received. This fills me with a sense of pride and joy.
While the pandemic and isolation were the main reasons why many people sought out Age UK's Step-Out Service, we have come to realise that there are numerous life circumstances that may require a helping hand in regaining independence and socialising. Whether it's a prolonged illness, anxiety, or the loss of a loved one, we are here to support you. I encourage anyone reading this to reach out to our wonderful team to determine if you are eligible for our Step-Out Service. We can help you reconnect with the things you love, discover new hobbies, and meet new people.
Some words from Step Out Worker - Julie
Being part of the step out service, gives me great job satisfaction and a chance to be a part of someone‘s life for a short while, often when they are feeling vulnerable and unsure of themselves or where their life might be taking them.
Together we work out a plan of action, this may involve practical help like an introduction to local social / activity groups, or building up confidence to walk outdoors or use public transport. Often anxiety issues can be a big hurdle to overcome, along the way there can be lots of laughs, ups and downs, and always interesting life stories to be shared. I have met so many lovely people during my time with Step Out and its always a thrill to me when I see someone I supported in the past, out and about shopping in town or participating in a group. I am reminded of how far they have come and how difficult it was for some of them in the beginning.
Some words from Step Out Worker - Kim
I love working for Step Out. It is an honour and a pleasure to be a part of someone’s journey - from them being nervous to go out and join a group or activity to regularly attending a group independently. It is so rewarding to see how this can make a huge difference in their lives – giving them something to look forward to, making improvements to their mental & physical health and reducing feelings of loneliness.
