Activity Groups for people with mild to moderate Dementia

What is MCST?

A 24 week programme for people with mild to moderate dementia. We have a different theme each week and do lots of activities based on the themes.

What does MCST stand for?

Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy – but each group gives their group its own name! Some past group names include: The Optimists, Fellow Friends, The Gathering, Friends Together, Chatty Observers!

What does a typical session look like?

Firstly, we all meet together and have a cuppa and biscuit and a chat -  its nice to catch up with each other! Then, we separate into our two groups – the MCST group and the Carers group. The MCST session involves talking about the weather that day, discussing something in the news, singing our group song (chosen by the group) and then we start some activities based on that weeks theme. The Carers group is supported by the the team at Carers Wakefield District, and they often have speakers come in but also have time to talk amongst themselves.

Who delivers the sessions?

Tracey and Rachel deliver the sessions, supported by our wonderful team of volunteers. Our participants often tell us how much they appreciate their support – whether that is offering them a cup of tea or talking with them in the session.

“The volunteers are lovely, they really care about each individual” – quote from MCST participant

Our Carers group is supported by Carers Wakefield District and their volunteers. It’s great we can work together to support people.

Where are the sessions held?

We currently have groups running in Castleford and Ossett. Please get in touch for more information.
