Loneliness in Lockdown to Fulfilling a Dream
We meet a lot of people here at Age UK Wakefield District, our teams visit many people who are in need of extra support to get them back to their previous levels of activity, maintain fitness levels or reach new goals.
We wanted to share with you, a fantastic success story from our Wraparound team.
Our Wraparound worker Kay first met Michelle when Michelle was in poor health and struggling to manage her COPD. Kay’s visits helped to boost Michelle’s confidence and feel supported.
“I realised that when I was singing, it distracted me from my COPD, I could put on my headphones and just concentrate on singing. Then I bought a keyboard, I didn’t know how to play and I can’t read music but I just taught myself. When lockdown came, I had to find a way to pass the time so I started writing songs. Kay was lovely, I always look forward to her visits and she made me feel like I could actually achieve my dream”
Through support from Future Pathways, Michelle contacted a local music studio and met Grant, who has worked with Michelle and helped her not only record her song, but also asked a friend to do the artwork for her cover. “Grant is brilliant, he’s been so flexible with me and always makes me laugh. I consider him a friend now.”
In April 2022, Michelle contracted Covid and struggled even further with her breathing which made singing difficult. But Michelle is determined to get through it and come out the other side …. singing
“Singing is the only thing keeping me going, I’m just trying to make the most of life and complete a dream”
