Age UK GM, Make a Difference: Help Us Shape the Future
Greater Manchester Age UKs are part of a much broader vibrant and resilient Voluntary, Community and Faith Sector, that operate as non-profit organistions, across the Country.
It was during the pandemic crisis that the strength of the sector came to the forefront, with Age UK’s leading the way reaching out to and supporting older people self -isolating many of them without any family support.
Here at Age UK Tameside, we quickly re-modelled our services, diverted resources into new crisis led initiatives, like free grocery deliveries, befriending, helpline support, and home visits, and managed to recruit new volunteers to deliver vital front line support as well as continuing to deliver services to those at high risk, including dementia care and support for carers.
We know that older people were one of the groups of people hit hardest by the pandemic, they endured many losses and many more challenges for those older people from racially diverse communities.
We also know that the work we started during the pandemic will continue as we work to support older people to recover from the devastating impact of the pandemic.
Before the pandemic, there were nearly half a million older people in Greater Manchester, where the healthy life expectancy for the region is lower than the national average and these health inequalities were further exposed during the pandemic.
Age UK has and always will centre the needs of older people in our work, going forward we know that there will be new and emerging needs post pandemic and long-established needs that will still need our focus, so that the needs of older people are not forgotten, and older people are not left behind as society moves on.
As restrictions ease and we all reflect on the last 18 months, we are joining together with other Age UK’s across Greater Manchester in planning for a future that ensures the increased awareness of the need for high-quality care, support and opportunities for older people is not forgotten. We are joining together to encourage community minded neighbours to join one of our nine individual, local boards.
We are currently seeking individuals who are passionate about our cause, willing and able to devote the necessary time and effort to the organisation, able to think creatively and speak their mind, and willing to take on the responsibilities of a Trustee role.
If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a trustee, join us for ‘Make a difference: Help us shape the future’ on 28 September.
At this online session, you’ll find out more about Greater Manchester’s Age UKs, hear from sitting Trustees and have opportunities to ask any questions you might have.
You can register to attend the event here.
After the event, those who are keen to get involved will be put in touch with their local Age UK to begin direct conversations about becoming a Trustee.
If you’re not able to attend ‘Make a difference: Help us shape the future’ but are still interested in finding out about becoming a Trustee, you can contact us directly here.
Everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy later life – wherever you live in Greater Manchester. Access to support, opportunities and local services at every stage of later life is our shared vision.
Be a part of that vision and our journey to support ageing well across Greater Manchester by becoming a trustee.
