Celebrating Older People This October

The beginning of October celebrates International Older People’s Day – 1st October passed by the United Nations to acknowledge and celebrate the 900+ million people aged over 60 around the world, a number that is set to increase to 2 billion by 2050!
This October we want everyone to celebrate older people. Our late Sovereign Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was just one exemplary example of an inspirational older person, who led an extraordinary life.
We all lead unique, extraordinary lives and that is why it is so important to celebrate those who have lived longer than most.
Ways you can celebrate a long life:
- Invite elderly relatives and friends for a meal – find out from them about times gone by.
- Tell us who inspires you and why, email enquiries@ageuksurrey.org.uk or message us on Facebook or Instagram
- Become a volunteer for Age UK Surrey and help make a difference to a local older person. Free training is offered on 30th September, 10.45 – 12.45pm at the Clockhouse Community Centre, to be an Age UK Surrey My Life My Story volunteer. Training with Rachel Lewis, of Presenting My Past, to capture people’s stories and make a mini book for them to keep.
We have volunteer roles for everyone, from helping in the Clockhouse Café to being part of our Vintage Store retail team, to assisting older people to complete benefits forms and home visiting befriending. Full training is given.
- Say hello to an elderly neighbour – you may be the only person they talk to all day.
Sue Zirps, Chief Executive of Age UK Surrey said: ‘Life is a gift and long life is to be celebrated. For many people the ageing process brings with it challenges such as health issues and social isolation and that is why it is so important for us to come together and celebrate. At Age UK Surrey we aim to bring practical support along with a sprinkling of joy and happiness to all older people’.
