Age UK Staffordshire is delighted to share the news of a new initiative spearheaded by our parent charity, Age UK, in collaboration with Dunelm, to improve the shopping experience for older individuals in our community.

Beginning on 29th August, Dunelm will host a Supported Shopping Hour every Thursday from 9 am to 10 am, specially designed to cater to the needs of older customers.

Age UK has worked closely with Dunelm, sharing valuable insights and feedback from the Services Sounding Board – a panel of older people who provide their thoughts on various topics. This collaboration has led to the development of the Supported Shopping Hour, during which Dunelm will implement the following changes:

  • Reduced Store Noise: Lowering the volume of in-store music to create a more serene shopping environment.
  • Increased Staff Assistance: Deploying additional staff on the shop floor to assist customers in finding specific products, explaining product benefits, and helping carry shopping to the car.
  • Rest Spots: Setting up rest spots in larger furniture format stores, offering seating and small tables for customers who need a break.

The trial period will run for two weeks in eight selected Dunelm stores, including our local Dunelm store in Newcastle-under-Lyme. The participating stores in the trial are:

  • Newcastle-under-Lyme
  • Stafford
  • Wolverhampton
  • Nottingham
  • Bridgend
  • Leeds
  • Oldbury
  • Wakefield

Carl Bennett, Chief Executive Officer at Age UK Staffordshire, said: ‘We’re thrilled to see initiatives like the Supported Shopping Hour being implemented. It demonstrates a strong commitment to making everyday activities more accessible for older people.

‘We believe this will not only enhance their shopping experience but also promote a greater sense of independence and well-being.’
