About Pension Credit
If you're over State Pension age and finding it tricky to make ends meet, you might be able to claim Pension Credit to top up your income.
Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit for older people which means it is based on your income and your savings.
For those eligible to claim, not only does it give you more income each week, entitlement to Pension Credit gives you access to other benefits!
By claiming Pension Credit you could automatically become entitled to:
- A free TV licence
- Free NHS dental treatment.
- You can also claim help towards the cost of glasses and transport to hospital.
- A Cold Weather Payment of £25 per week when the average temperature in your area is 0°C or below for seven days in a row between 1 November and 31 March.
- A discount on your water bill.
- If you rent your home, you may get Housing Benefit to help towards paying your rent.
- If you pay Council Tax, you could get help with Council Tax Reduction payments.
- If you are a carer or have a disability, you could get an extra amount of Pension Credit every week.
- The Winter Fuel Allowance payment - an annual payment to help with heating costs during the colder months.
This is a great benefit as it unlocks so much other support, yet it’s estimated that about 1 million older households are missing out on Pension Credit because people aren’t automatically told that they are entitled to this
benefit - to receive it they need to make a claim.
You have nothing to lose by applying, and potentially a lot to gain – and if you've previously been turned down, you can still make a new claim each year.
