World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Support #WEAAD2024
Wear purple, or arrange purple-themed activities, and donate to Age UK Solihull for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on Saturday 15 June 2024 (or any day that week).
Age UK Solihull has teamed up with Solihull Safeguarding Adults Board Business Team once again for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), which encourages organisations involved in the care sector and the wider public to pledge to help stamp out abuse in older people. For more information about the day, visit the UN website.
Did you know...?
- Around 1 in 6 people 60 years and older experienced some form of abuse in community settings during the past year.
- Elder abuse can lead to serious physical injuries and long-term psychological consequences.
- Solihull has one of the fastest growing older populations in the country, meaning elder abuse is may increase.
- Last year, 63% of safeguarding enquiries received about adults who may be at risk of abuse or neglect related to over 65s.
- The most common type of abuse of individuals over 65 in Solihull is neglect.
Please donate to help us be there for vulnerable older people in Solihull
WEAAD was on Saturday 15 June 2024. We were in Touchwood Shopping Centre on the day, wearing purple and collecting donations. Pop Voices Choir joined us and performed to help raise awareness of the campaign. A fantastic total of £427 was collected on the day.
We also asked our supporters to wear purple (a symbol colour for dignity) or organise purple themed events and make a donation to Age UK Solihull to help continue our work with vulnerable older people, and in particular to be the voice for those who are victims of abuse.
Examples of abuse include:
- Domestic abuse
- Financial abuse
- Emotional abuse
- Neglect
- Sexual abuse
- Scams, including those offering help and advice on COVID-19 or with financial assistance
- Fraud
With your help, we can be here for vulnerable older people in Solihull who need us.
Support us for WEAAD, make a donation and upload photos of you or your group/family wearing or doing something purple to Twitter using the hashtag #WEAAD2024 and tagging @ageuksolihull and @SolihullSAB.
