Lonely older woman

As Christmas approaches, Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is joining Age UK’s national fundraising appeal, Together, We’re Not Alone, to raise awareness and help combat loneliness among older people in our local community.

Many older people can feel lonely and isolated any time of year but especially during the festive season when traditionally family and friends celebrate the holidays together.

We’re asking people to donate to our Christmas appeal and help make a difference to the lives of older people in Telford and Shropshire. Donations will directly fund local services such as volunteer befriending visits and telephone calls, day centres, friendship groups and a variety of social activities that bring warmth and companionship to those who need it most.

79-year-old Margaret attends an Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin day centre said: ‘Honestly, I like everything about this place, I like the company and the friendliness. I love the staff and the volunteers here. The food is excellent. Joining this day centre was the best thing I ever did.’

‘My husband died, you see, and I was very lonely, here at the day centre, I have more friends than I know what to do with. I'm not lonely anymore.’

Even a small contribution can help someone like Margaret. Just £10 can fund a weekly visit from a volunteer befriender to an older person in our community, while £50 could support a regular social activity that provides people with the opportunity to socialise, make friends throughout the year.
