A craft session with a difference at Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin’s Newport day centre resulted in the creation of an eye-catching tiled mural depicting colourful scenes from the historic town.

The crafting session was enjoyed by 22 of the day centre members who, says day centre organiser Sue Hughes, ‘had a great time working on a very different project which would not have been possible without our recent and most generous £300 donation from the Newport Lite Rotary Club.’

Jennifer Kelleher, the Education Manager from Craven Dunnill Jackfield, specialists in the restoration of ceramics for the heritage market, visited the day centre to oversee the craft session. Once the mural had been fired it was framed by a local Men in Sheds group.

Sue added: ‘The mural is really quite something, and certainly something for the members to be proud of. It was lovely to have the expertise of Jennifer from Craven Dunnill on hand to guide us through the process. I’d also like to thank my fellow volunteers Elaine Fitzpatrick and Ann Whitfield who do such a wonderful job.’

The Newport day centre, which meets in the Cornmell Lea Community Room every Tuesday, has more interesting activities planned, including a musical morning and storytelling.
