To mark Volunteers’ Week this year, we’ve been interviewing some of our wonderful volunteers to find out more about why they volunteer for Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin.

Although Volunteers’ Week ended on Sunday, we’ve still got some wonderful stories that we want to share with you. This time we’re meeting Lorraine, a volunteer helper at a couple of our dementia support groups.

‘I have never been the most well off of people, and never will be, but consider myself well blessed in the things on which a value cannot be placed: in happiness, health, family, relationships, where I live.’

‘I was first “cajoled” into volunteering for Age UK in their retail shop in Mardol whilst still working fulltime, then on retiring, in the Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin furniture store on Riverside.’

‘Whilst enjoying both these roles and fully appreciating the important role they have in raising funds, it was only on visiting the Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin office opposite the store I realised how many opportunities there were to share the good things with those who have come across a hiccup in their lives.’

‘Volunteering with people who have been diagnosed with dementia has been a wonderful experience and I have learned so much and had so much fun. I would like this to be a tribute to my very dear friend who developed early onset dementia and died at 59, 13 years ago, and who I am sure I could have supported more.’

Volunteers’ Week is an opportunity to celebrate volunteers and to thank them for the amazing work they do. If you’d like to find out more about volunteering for Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, call us on 01743 233 123 or email volunteering@ageukstw.org.uk
