Volunteer spotlight on Alison

Volunteer Alison at an Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin Dementia support group

To mark Volunteers’ Week this year, we’ve been interviewing some of our wonderful volunteers to find out more about why they volunteer for Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin.

First up it’s Alison, a Dementia support group volunteer:

‘I have been volunteering at an Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin Dementia support group for a few years now. I started to volunteer to support my dad, who attended the Pontesbury group.’

‘I feel having gone through this myself, I can offer an experienced ear to listen and share ideas of support and of services that were helpful to me. I love reminiscing with the person with dementia so I can capture some of the person they used to be.’

‘I enjoy doing the craft activities, but what really makes me happy is when we have singing. The older people come to life, remembering a time in the past and generally knowing all about the words.’

‘The benefits for me of volunteering are huge, I really enjoy it, and always leave feeling in a much more positive mood.’

Volunteers’ Week is an opportunity to celebrate volunteers and to thank them for the amazing work they do. If you’d like to find out more about volunteering for Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, call us on 01743 233 123 or email volunteering@ageukstw.org.uk
