Age UK Shropshire Telford and Wrekin is expanding its popular Help at Home service, for older people who might require a little help with household jobs.

Help at Home supports older people to maintain their independence by providing practical assistance with tasks such as cleaning, ironing or picking up prescriptions from the pharmacy.

‘It also provides you with companionship,’ said John, one of the service’s clients. ‘It’s always nice to see another person and have a nice chat.’

Age UK Shropshire Telford and Wrekin is now reaching out to more older people who might benefit from the service.

Operating right across the county, the scheme employs a team of caring, well-trained Home Support Workers who carry out everyday tasks that an older person may find difficult to manage. These might include:

  • vacuuming and dusting
  • bathroom and kitchen cleaning
  • shopping and collecting prescriptions
  • laundry and ironing.

Wherever possible the same support worker will visit each time to provide continuity, and visits are usually undertaken in two-hour blocks. There is a charge for the Help at Home service.

Anyone over the age of 60 may be eligible for this service. Following an enquiry or referral, one of the organisation’s experienced assessors will visit the person at their home to decide how best to help.
