Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is proud to have signed up to a special covenant, underlying the organisation’s commitment to the older LGBT+ community.
Signing up to the SAND (Safe Ageing No Discrimination) covenant highlights the huge importance we place upon older and old LGBT+ people feeling safe and having their needs and wishes understood.
Heather Osborne, Chief Executive said: ‘Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is proud to be one of the very first organisations to sign up for the covenant which has been drawn up by SAND, an organisation that campaigns for the rights of older and old LGBT+ people in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.’
‘We have worked with SAND since its inception over 10 years ago now. For us it is hugely important that older and old LGBT+ people feel that we are a safe organisation, where they can go for help and where they know the staff and volunteers will understand their needs and wishes.’
‘We want to be here for all older people. Being signed up to the SAND covenant is a very helpful way to make a public commitment to show that this is important to us and that we want to do the very best we can for our older and old LGBT+ community.’
Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin also works with SAND to offer a telephone befriending service called Reach, which offers older LGBT+ people a regular confidential phone call with a friendly trained volunteer.
