Walking footballers are in a league of their own

You won’t see them any time soon on Match of the Day but the players at Shrewsbury Walking Football Club are in a league of their own because, to them, friendship is just as important as football.
‘Why not give it a go?’ says one of the organisers, Graham Irish. ‘It’s a great way for people over the age of 55 to keep fit and have a lot of fun.’
‘Groups and individuals are most welcome to pop along to see what it’s all about, but if you fancy a game, please get in touch first, you can find us on Facebook.’
The club is now in its tenth year and is going from strength to strength. Members meet every Thursday morning at Monkmoor Recreation Centre in Shrewsbury and a session costs just £4.00.
The players, all of whom are volunteers, run the club: they transport the kit, select the teams, and take responsibility for first aid and health & safety to ensure that everyone has a good time.
Graham adds: ‘Once you have made contact, you will receive advice about how to join the club and what the ethos of the club is.’
There is also a Women’s Walking Football Club that meets at the same venue on Wednesday mornings who are looking for new players.
