New friendships at Womens Walking Football Club

There wasn't a dry eye in the house as members of Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin’s Women’s Walking Football Club told heart-warming tales of new friendships made, and lives changed for the better.
An audience heard how the club, supported by local charities Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin and Energize Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, had helped alleviate loneliness for some and put a new spring in the step of all the members.
One told the gathering that she had been walking past the window of Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin one day when she'd spotted a poster. It was promoting the recently-formed walking football club that meets each Wednesday at Monkmoor Recreation Ground in Shrewsbury.
‘The poster really spoke to me,’ she said. ‘I knew that that's what I wanted to do and it changed my life. The football team is brilliant fun. We have so many laughs!’
Stories of the success of the club were told at the annual general meeting of Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin at which volunteer organiser Kate Brown and other members told of their enthusiasm and the happiness the club had brought them.
Kate said that she had been among the millions watching the all-conquering Lionesses in the 2022 Euros tournament and became inspired by women’s football at all levels. She was inspired to set up the new Shrewsbury group although, she says: ‘I’m not sure we can be compared to the Lionesses! We just have a good laugh!’
