The Power of Giving Back: Celebrating Student Volunteering Week 2025

Published on 10 February 2025 01:24 PM

Since the 18th century, students in the UK have been rolling up their sleeves and making a difference in their communities. This tradition continues today, with thousands of young people dedicating their time, energy, and hearts to causes that matter.

Student Volunteering Week, happening from February 10–16, 2025, is a chance to celebrate these inspiring individuals and the impact they make every day. We are endlessly grateful to our student volunteers—your passion and commitment fuel the work we do.

One of our Volunteer’s Journey: Riley’s Story with Age UK Sheffield - Digital Volunteer team

Meet Riley, a university student whose desire to make a difference led him to volunteer at Age UK Sheffield.

What inspired you to start volunteering?

"At university, I felt like something was missing. I wanted more than just lectures and assignments—I craved real-world experiences, something that would challenge me and help me grow. Volunteering with Age UK Sheffield was exactly what I needed. It wasn’t just about gaining experience; it was about connecting with people, exploring parts of Sheffield I’d never seen, and feeling like I was part of something bigger."

Can you share a memorable moment from your time volunteering?

"One moment that really stuck with me was visiting an elderly woman’s home with Èilis, who’s part of the digital support team at Age UK Sheffield. She needed help with online shopping and printing piano sheet music—simple stuff, really. But her warmth, her breathtaking view of Crosspool, and her asthmatic cat (yes, you read that right) made it unforgettable. That day taught me that even small acts of kindness can leave a lasting impact. It inspired me to keep going, to help more people, and to see the beauty in everyday moments."
