Age UK Salford was part of series of events which took place across Greater Manchester during the very first Greater Manchester Festival of Ageing. Across the two weeks of the festival, over 350 events took place and over 8000 people attended. The aim of the festival was to celebrate the positive aspects of ageing.
The main Salford Festival was held at Salford Quays on Saturday 7th July and was opened by Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett with Councillor Gina Reynolds who represents the Langworthy ward.
The main activity was a Dragon Boat Race with local partner organisations involved.
There were plenty of activities running throughout the day including: ping pong, kurling, a climbing wall and circus skills. There were tai chi, relaxation, laughter yoga and Pakistani dancing sessions. There was henna painting, Polish cuisine and live music from a jazz trio.
Smaller events were held in two local parks, Buile Hill and Albert Park, at Salford Arts Theatre and at our Humphrey Booth Day Centre and at Critchley Community Hub.

All the Salford events were supported by Age UK Salford staff and volunteers alongside colleagues from other partner organisations. The festivals provided an unrivalled way for older people in Salford to come together and enjoy a wide range of social and fun activities.
About Ambition for Ageing / Festival of Ageing
Ambition for Ageing is a programme aimed at creating more age friendly places and empowering people to live fulfilling lives as they age. It is funded by the Big Lottery Fund’s Ageing Better programme, which aims to reduce social isolation of older people. Led by GMCVO, the programme is being delivered by a cross sector partnership via a series of scaled programmes, one of which is the Greater Manchester Festival of Ageing.
The Festival of Ageing took place from the 2nd to the 15th July and was aimed at all those who are aged over 50 and living in Greater Manchester. It was being co-ordinated by a partnership of five groups, 4CT (a charity in Manchester), HMR Circle (in Rochdale), Manchester Metropolitan University Age Friendly Team, Persona (in Bury) and Wigan Athletic Community Trust.
The activities covered: fun, music, dancing, hobbies, physical activities, information and with lots of opportunities join in.
