Buying Used Furniture Helps Older People in Rotherham

Local charity, Age UK Rotherham, is appealing for donations of good quality pre-loved furniture to sell in their furniture warehouse, so that they can continue to help older people across the borough.

So many people are managing on a tight budget these days making the cost of furnishing a new home or replacing worn furniture out of reach for them. The Furniture Warehouse on Fitzwilliam Road opened in 2015, it offers an affordable alternative to the high prices of new household items and everything on sale is clean and in good repair.

Another reason to consider pre-owned furniture is the benefit to the environment. The raw materials, manufacture and shipping of new furniture has a massive impact on the environment and research shows that 22 million pieces of furniture are discarded every year in the UK, much of it to landfill. Shopping at Age UK Rotherham’s Furniture Warehouse not only helps the older community live later life better, but it also helps the environment.

New donations of furniture, white goods and electricals are needed all the time and our friendly and experienced team at the warehouse can collect any items free of charge, which is a massive help to anyone and a convenient way of disposing of big items.

Proceeds from the sale of goods and furniture go towards helping to support older people in Rotherham, providing services that help them stay independent and connected in the community. One of these is the regular Wellbeing Socials programme providing regular free taster sessions and socials across the borough aimed at helping reduce isolation by encouraging people to get out, make friends and stay connected in their communities.

Jack Burton, Assistant Manager of the Furniture Warehouse said: “We provide a service to the community, collecting unwanted furniture and selling it on at great prices. We’ve helped so many people who needed low-cost furniture and the great thing is every item sold helps older people in our area”
