Who decides what the right age is to achieve your dreams?
What kind of man sets out to run 75 marathons in 75 days?
What kind of man sets out to run 75 marathons in 75 days at the age of 75, and then add to the mix the aim of raising 75 thousand pounds to benefit the very special Newman School here in Rotherham.
He conquered the Sahara Desert at the age of 70, then ran 150 miles in one go in a credible time of 14 hours at the age of 71 and spent many years running marathons all over the globe. A truly inspirational achievement.
This is the story as it will enfold of Ray Matthews, born and bred in Masbrough, at a time when a certain Mr A Hitler was still throwing bombs at us.
The eldest of a family of four boys faced with growing up and learning the full life skills in the school of life, often the hard way when he decided to become a boxer in 1951 at the age of 10 to exact retribution on school bullies. Ray went on to great achievements throughout his colourful young life as a competitive boxer. It was this early training as a boxer that provided him with the strength of mind, setting the foundations for his later challenging achievements.
Join him for a special evening at Rotherham Civic Theatre on May 18th to hear more about his life and achievements. Ticket information available here. All ticket sales will go to the Newman School.
