Gentle, safe and effective earwax removal
What is earwax and why can it cause problems?
Earwax is naturally produced in our ear canals to moisturise them and to help protect them and keep them clean and free of germs.
Normally we don’t need to remove it because our ears are ‘self cleaning’ – the earwax usually passes out of the ears harmlessly by itself but sometimes too much can build up and block the ears.
Some people are naturally prone to excess earwax building up in their ears and may need frequent treatment to remove it when it becomes a problem.
A build-up of earwax in your ear can cause issues such as:
Earache
Hearing loss
Tinnitus
Vertigo
Ear infections
These problems will usually improve once the excess earwax has been removed.
What is microsuction earwax removal?
Ear microsuction is now regarded by ear health professionals as the safest, quickest and most effective method of earwax removal, including wax that has become hard or impacted.
The old-fashioned technique of ear syringing to remove earwax is no longer generally available because of the possibility of causing damage to the ear drum or creating infections due to water in the ear canal which is normally dry.
The microsuction earwax removal process uses a small medical suction device to gently and carefully remove excess wax from the ear whilst being able to maintain a clear view of the ear canal right up to the ear drum through a microscope.
Ear Microsuction appointments at The Bradbury Centre
Age UK Portsmouth holds regular ear microsuction clinics every month at The Bradbury Centre with independent professionals who have undertaken microsuction training through accredited training providers.
The microsuction service costs £40 to treat one ear or £70 for both ears.
It is important that the earwax is softened before your appointment to make the microsuction procedure as comfortable and effective as possible.
We recommend using medicated olive oil drops in your ears daily for at least 7 to 14 days before your appointment. Products such as Earol or Earex can be used, which are widely available from chemists or online from Amazon.
If this is not carried out prior to your appointment it is likely that the microsuction treatment will be unsuccessful in removing all of the earwax and you may need to book and pay for a second appointment.
