Befriender volunteer (Community Links Oxfordshire)
In this role, you will be linked with an individual who needs a little extra support. There are many people who live in our communities who may benefit from a little help, this can be especially so after bereavement or following an illness. You will help an individual to work towards an agreed goal which will enable them to re-engage, be more independent and live life to the full. Supporting a person to live life to the full makes a real difference.
What does the befriender volunteer role involve?
The befriending role is unique to the individual you are supporting but examples include helping a person feel confident using the bus or shops again, going along with them as they start a new group or activity, helping them to learn a new skill or re-engage with something that matters to them, getting them back on track with paperwork or increasing their social connections by talking and listening with them regularly, perhaps even a day trip or two out!
What will you get out of it?
- Fun and enjoyment.
- A sense of pride – Being able to see and hear first-hand the positive impact your involvement is having on someone’s life.
- Social connection – The opportunity to meet a wide range of people and build lasting friendships.
- Developing new skills – We will ensure you feel fully supported and knowledgeable to volunteer to the best of your ability.
- Being part of your local community

We also appreciate that volunteers may have other commitments, such as caring responsibilities so we will work with you and the individual to agree a pattern which works for everyone.
Most befriending placements last between 4 and 6 months but can be for a shorter term as well. We usually ask for a six months commitment as a minimum, but this does not have be continuous.
