Working in Later life
Published on 22 February 2024 01:29 PM
Our CEO joined the BBC Radio Norfolk daytime show to discuss working in later life and some of the considerations and barriers people are facing.
Dan shared the complexity of this subject, which are summarised here:
- Personal choice, not everyone wants a "cliff-edge" retirement..
- Employee performance & experience doesn't stop at 65...
- People have gone back to work as their pension is not enough to live on due to the cost-of-living crisis..
- Assumed "norms" of house ownership and pension savings by retirement age is no longer a reality (and it wasn't anyway for many) so people have to work for longer..
- Work provides balance to some people's lives with purpose, activity, and socialisation across the generations..
- Living longer means we have more time to try different career pathways..
Age UK Norwich is encouraging employers to make workplaces more age-friendly, which will only be a positive benefit, and evidence shows a great return mature workers are making in view of productivity, reliability and knowledge. Sadly, we're losing a lot of 50+ workers due to either ill-health or caring responsibilities. In Norfolk last year, 180K Drs Notes were issued, with many of those listing preventable conditions. They're also stopping people looking for work. A healthy society is a more productive society.
