Rising prices, and everyday announcements of budget cuts and cuts to vital support funds have left many over 50 frightened about the coming winter months and how they will be able to continue to heat their homes, feed themselves and pay their bills.

Voluntary sector groups have banded together, with support from their corporate partners, to be able to offer a free information & advice event for anyone worried about winter, needing support with where to turn and what entitlements they might be eligible for.

Hosted at Castle Quarter, in their event space by TKMAXX, Age UK Norwich with their Corporate Partner Loveday & Partners, Citizens Advice Norfolk, Norfolk Community Advice Network and Groundworks East are banding together from 10:00 – 14:30 on the 24 September to help the people of Norwich.

CEO of Age UK Norwich, Dan Skipper said “The winter months bring additional risks, particularly with health and finances. We encourage residents to get prepared, whether that be vaccinations, making their home safe, stocking up on essentials, checking finances, or looking at ways to keep connected in their community.”

He continued “At the moment, too many people fall through the net, and through the generosity of our corporate partners, fundraisers and local trusts, we can offer emergency hardship support. Last year we funded £7,383.69 of items such as fuel top-ups, heated throws, white goods, clothing, food vouchers and other wellbeing items”

Ben Scarlett, Director of Norfolk Community Advice Network added “There are big changes to the financial support available to older people this winter, with the Winter Fuel Payments becoming means-tested for the first time. If you are worried about keeping your home warm and paying your bills this winter, come along and have a chat about the support that is available.”

Partners included in the event were keen to support, offering their unique expertise to support those worried about what the next few months have in store. Andy Johnson, Green Dr at Groundwork East said: “As a result of increases to energy and water costs, coupled with the cost of living crisis, more people than ever are experiencing fuel poverty with households having to choose between heating and eating. The Green Doctor service provides tailored advice and practical low-cost energy-saving measures based on an individual’s needs. We understand that everyone’s circumstances are different, and we can identify improvements to keep residents warm and bring monthly costs down.”

Loveday & Partners have generously funded Age UK Norwich to provide heated blankets to the most in need and our client base to support keeping warm and well this winter. This demonstrates the second year their generous support has helped people in Norwich through their work with Age UK Norwich.
