Timeless fun at Age UK Norwich’s over 50s big night out

On Thursday 15 August, Age UK Norwich staff put on a successful party night for over 50s in the region, hosted at Mr Postles’ Apothecary. The night proved there is no age limit on fun, laughter and dancing, with over around 100 attendees at the event enjoying hits throughout the decades.
The Age UK Norwich team worked closely with partygoers to create an inviting atmosphere for all, with the whole ground floor of the venue offering a variety of breakout areas and activities such as a photo booth, party favour table, free arrival drink and plenty of room on the dance floor.
The music ranged from classic disco, all the way through to ACDC headbangers, with people up on their feet dancing the night away, proving there are no limits on enjoyment.
This event was part of the charity’s range of clubs and trips, which provide opportunity for social connection, health and wellbeing – all critical parts of staying independent as we age.
Age UK Norwich Chief Executive Officer said “The night was a huge celebration of later life. The city is for everyone, of all ages, and we had people from age 50 to 90 dancing, talking and laughing. Its not age that defines us – its our interests, passions and things we enjoy. To quote Frankie Vali – oh what a night!”
Mr Skipper added “We’ve heard from our clients how they feel the city is not for them at times, and factors like transport and mobility have a large part to play. We also know loneliness is a big issue in the city, and factors more common in later life, such as chronic illness, bereavement, moving home, physical and mental health can all make meeting people harder than it used to!”
The charity is on a mission to make the city age friendly, part of a global health initiative. This includes challenging the assumptions and misconceptions around aging.
Denise Troughton, Age Friendly Lead said “How older people are portrayed in the news and media is incredibly important; too often stories play-into stereotypes of people being victims of their age, and not the enormous contribution older people already play in our society. Much of age friendly is about recognising the factors later life brings – ensuring our city enables older residents to fully participate in all Norwich has to offer. The over 50s night out event aimed to tackle the everyday ageism that is present and remind people that fun is ageless!”
By bringing people together to celebrate the vibrancy and resilience of over 50s, activities such as these parties offer a crucial opportunity to foster intergenerational connections and community engagement. Showing that ageing is not a decline, but a stage of life full of opportunities.
Attendees were blown away by the atmosphere and event stating:
“Brilliant night, thanks to all involved in organising this. it was a fabulous night.”
“Fab-u-lous!! Well done Age UK Norwich had a blast”
