Tackling Dementia Diagnosis During Dementia Action Week

Dementia Action Week is an annual awareness campaign held in the UK, specifically led by the Alzheimer's Society. It takes place in May and aims to raise awareness about dementia and encourage people to take action. This year (2024), the focus was on improving dementia diagnosis rates. The campaign highlighted the importance of getting a timely diagnosis so people with dementia can access the support they need and live a better quality of life.
During the week, Age UK Norwich hosted a variety of events for both clients and staff to raise the importance of timely dementia diagnosis.
Our week kicked off with a heartwarming reminiscence group meeting on Monday. We discussed the power of memories, big and small, and their significance in shaping our lives. One member even shared a lovely poem, "It Was Long Ago" by Eleanor Farjeon.
On Tuesday, we got active with the falls prevention class held at Duoro House, welcoming members from Ivy Court as well. After 45 minutes of gentle exercise, we shared in conversation over tea and biscuits.
On Wednesday, we hosted a one-off Arty Party group with help from the Cosstessy Knit and Natter group. Together, we got crafty, creating fidget squares. It was a fantastic opportunity to unleash our creativity, have some laughs, and even pick up a new skill. These fidget squares will become a valuable resource for people living with dementia.
Thursday's event offered a valuable learning opportunity for our staff here at Age UK Norwich. Staff were engaged by a client's granddaughter who shared her experience supporting her grandmother with dementia. The discussion was further enriched by insights into dementia diagnosis provided directly by representatives from the Alzheimer's Society.
“Dementia diagnosis is a crucial first step in accessing vital support and ensuring the best possible quality of life for those living with the condition,” said Marcela Lekston, Health and Community Support Worker at Age UK Norwich. “We’re thrilled with the positive response to our Dementia Action Week events, and we hope to have empowered our community to address memory concerns and seek timely diagnosis.”
As Dementia Action Week comes to an end, our dedication to supporting those living with dementia continues. We'll continue working to raise awareness and create a supportive environment through engaging activities and possible future dementia-friendly clubs.
