Be Scam Alert! UK Landlines Upgrading to Digital System
Published on 08 May 2024 09:43 AM
The UK's phone network is undergoing a significant modernisation, with landline services transitioning from analogue to a digital technology called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) by December 2025. This exciting upgrade offers numerous benefits, but it's also crucial to be aware of potential scams targeting unsuspecting residents during this large-scale change.
Landlines have been delivered through an analogue network for decades, but this is being replaced with newer digital technology. While the core functionality of landlines will remain the same for most users, the switch will rely on an internet connection. Network providers like BT and Virgin Media O2 will be contacting customers to facilitate the change in a smooth and timely manner.
UK phone and broadband companies are working closely with Ofcom, the communications regulator, to ensure a smooth transition for all customers. This includes providing support to those who may need new equipment or assistance during the upgrade.
Once you've moved to the new digital system, your landline will mainly work as it always has, although there will be some differences. For example, it won't work if there's a power cut, so you'll need an alternative solution such as a mobile phone or battery backup unit for emergency calls.
As the switchover is affecting millions of homes, criminals may take the opportunity to develop new scams. These scam attempts could happen over the phone, via email, or in person on your doorstep.
Protect Yourself from Scams:
STOP – Take a moment to think before parting with your money or personal information.
CHALLENGE – Could it be fake? It's OK to reject, refuse, or ignore any requests. You should never feel rushed or pressured into making a decision.
PROTECT – Contact your bank immediately if you think you've been a victim of a scam and report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040.
Dan Skipper, CEO of Age UK Norwich said “functionality we’ve had in the workplace for years will become an option for our home landlines, which should provide better safety features to either block unwanted callers, or have better evidence for authorities to investigate and prosecute”.
