Age UK Norwich Sets Sail on the Norfolk Broads

Published on 29 July 2024 09:35 AM

Our recent boat trip, made possible by the support of the Aviva Access to Nature Fund, provided a unique opportunity for local people over 50 to connect with nature and each other.

The event, held on Friday 26 July, saw over 20 individuals embark on a leisurely cruise along the River Bure on four days boats. Participants enjoyed stunning views of the local area while soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the company of fellow guests.

Ellie Daynes, Health and Community Outreach Officer at Age UK Norwich said “Our clubs and trips are a lifeline to so many of our over 50s who are experiencing loneliness. Getting out and about restores their sense of human connection and helps them to not feel forgotten about. The physical and psychological impacts of human connection should never be undermined.”

The day concluded with lunch at the Kings Head pub in Wroxham before traveling back to Norwich, having had a wonderful time.

An attendee of the trip said “Absolutely fabulous! Really enjoyed all of it, especially the boat rides and having a look round Horning. And then we had a wonderful lunch. Fantastic!”

Age UK Norwich is committed to providing a range of activities and events for older people in the community. This boat trip is just one example of the charity’s work to promote social interaction, improve mental health, and enhance the overall well-being of its clients.

This project has been funded by Aviva Access to Nature Fund - “Working together with local communities, our aim is to promote the physical, environmental, social, and economic benefits of NbS leading to more resilient climate-ready communities. As part of the wider community engagement programme, Riverscape East Anglia is supporting groups who experience barriers to accessing Norfolk’s rivers and countryside during 2024. The Aviva Access to Nature Fund has been created to help break down barriers that are preventing a more diverse range of people from accessing nature. The Aviva Access to Nature Fund can provide funding for the following purposes

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Aldiss Boat Hire for their warm hospitality and for providing such a wonderful vessel for the day. Their support was invaluable in making this event a success.
