LGBTQ+ Support for Older People
Published on 05 June 2024 08:00 AM
We want everyone over 50 to feel supported as they get older, regardless of sexuality.
This pride month, we want the LGBTQ+ members of North Tyneside to know where they can find the support they might need as they get older. Being part of the LGBTQ+ community as an older person might have adverse effects for some people and will affect everyone differently. There are so many aspects that factor into someone’s experience with the community. Older members of the community lived through a history of criminalisation and oppression. Despite the change in law and acceptance in society, there is still a fear of being discriminated against, especially as they look for means of care as an older person.
There can be prejudices from the people around them which makes it difficult to come out to family, friends, and carers which is why we are proud to offer a range of inclusive support to members of the community.
How can you support the LGBTQ+?
If you have a friend or a loved one who is in the LGBTQ+ community, there are many ways you can support them.
- Listen to their experiences.
- Ask what you can do to support them on their journey.
- Respect their confidentiality and the way they have trusted you in coming out as this can be a scary experience.
- Educate yourself on the LGBTQ+ community, this can help you to support them better.
- Be available for support if they need it.
How can we support you?
Everyone deserves to make the most of later life, that’s why it is important to share resources about advice and services available. We can also share information on the courses of action you can take if you experience discrimination due to your sexuality.
Alongside understanding rights and courses of action, connection is also important. Regardless of sexuality, being connected to others has great benefits on mental health and wellbeing. Connecting with people with shared interests can create friendships and companionships that can come as the best support systems we need.
