Giving Tuesday 2022: Supporting Older People in Norfolk

Published on 22 November 2022 02:35 PM

Tuesday 29th November is Giving Tuesday - a day that encourages people to give back to others. Over the last ten years, Giving Tuesday has grown into a global movement that inspires millions of people around the globe to collaborate and celebrate giving.

Now more than ever, it’s becoming important to support others when we can, especially vulnerable groups in the community such as older people in our county. In particular, with the cost of living impacting many, now is a good time to start to do that little bit more to support those who have less.

Age UK Norfolk are working tirelessly to support older people across Norfolk through our vital services which include our Information and Advice Help Line, Advocacy, Money Matters, Befriending, Digital Inclusion and Traveling Companionship. Volunteers and fundraisers at Age UK Norfolk often remark how incredibly rewarding ‘giving back’ and supporting these causes can feel, and so, one good turn often leads to a greater sense of joy in those doing something good for others. In fact, ‘giving’ can have long-lasting benefits that can also boost our physical and psychological health.

The Benefits of Giving:

  • Giving back lowers blood pressure and stress levels
  • It activates the areas of the brain associated with pleasure and trust
  • It can lead to better social connections
  • It can be good for boosting your mental health

Manageable Ways to ‘Give Back’

There are many ways we can give back to others in need, it doesn’t have to take much of your time or money. Often it’s the thought that counts, which can lead to greater things. Firstly, we always recommend that you check in with yourself first to see if you’re in a good position to help others. As the old adage goes – it’s important to attach your own oxygen mask first.

If you are ready and able to support others, there are many different creative ways you can give back. Here are just a few manageable ideas to consider:

Donate or shop with us: Consider buying something from our shop on Yaxham Road in Dereham or drop off any unwanted items to us. We’re currently in great need of stock, especially furniture donations. We also offer a free county wide collection service. If you don’t live near Dereham, we also have an Age UK Norfolk eBay store where you can make purchases.

Donate the cost of a coffee: £3 could cover the cost of a befriending call at Age UK Norfolk, that’s just like skipping one Costa a week. If that sounds possible for you, you can find out about the different ways to donate on our website.

Fundraise for us: Whether you like to knit, bake or arrange coffee mornings, organising a fundraising event can not only raise funds for Age UK Norfolk but community sales and gatherings are also an excellent way for you, and others, to feel part of the community.

Try ‘Thrifty Fundraising’: Many people like to have a spring clean in the loft or garage and clear out unwanted items, selling them on Gumtree, in yard sales or car boots, and donating the proceeds to charity.

Corporate Supporters: We always welcome support from local businesses. If your place of work is looking to help a local charity, we’d welcome any contribution you can make. As a member of staff you might like to propose a bake sale, sponsored event, team-bonding sports occasion and other fundraisers to your colleagues.

Volunteer Today: Being a volunteer for Age UK Norfolk is a rewarding experience and offers people the chance to share their talents, learn new skills and make new meaningful connections with others. You can give the gift of your time, from as little as 30 minutes a week, to support our vital services.

We have a variety of roles available including office admin, face to face support with paperwork, befriending, digital inclusion champions, travel companions and more! Contact our Volunteer Coordinator today and find out more: T 01603 785 210 E volunteering@ageuknorfolk.org.uk
