Empowering Seniors through Digital Inclusion: Age UK Mid Mersey’s Grant-Funded Initiative

Published on 13 March 2024 08:40 AM

In a bid to bridge the digital divide among the older population, Age UK Mid Mersey recently secured a grant from the Liverpool City Region Shared Prosperity Fund. This funding has been instrumental in enhancing public-use IT facilities and upgrading digital devices, aiming to empower seniors with the knowledge and skills to help them navigate today’s digital age.

The post pandemic world is seeing an accelerated shift towards digital and online services across various sectors. However, this transition poses a significant challenge for older individuals who may lack the necessary digital skills, potentially limiting their access to vital services such as banking, shopping, health services, and communication platforms crucial for staying connected with loved ones.

The adverse effects of social isolation have been particularly pronounced among the elderly, many of whom find themselves lonely and with limited support from family or friends. Through this initiative, Age UK Mid Mersey is committed to ensuring that seniors are not left behind in this fast-paced digital world by offering comprehensive digital skills support through education and personalised advice from our Digital Champions.

How to access the digital skills/computer facilities?

There will be weekly drop in sessions at our Age UK Offices, 44 Church Street, Runcorn, WA7 1LR every Wednesday between 10am-2pm commencing Wednesday 13th March, and weekly classes at the Community Room in Runcorn Railway Station, every Thursday between 1pm-2pm from Thursday 18th April onwards.

Following a learner-led approach to provide flexibility for individuals to participate either individually or as part of a group, these sessions can be attended on a weekly basis or as per the client's preference. There will be no predefined lesson plans; clients have the autonomy to choose topics they are interested in learning about. These topics can be revisited as many times as necessary, catering to the unique needs and preferences of each client. Our Digital Champions will be on hand to offer one-on-one assistance during the drop-in sessions. Clients are encouraged to bring their own devices and required to register beforehand.

As digital technology continues to shape our world, with the help of this grant-funded initiative, Age UK Mid Mersey is committed to providing ongoing support, education, and guidance to empower older individuals with the digital literacy skills necessary to actively and independently participate in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, ensuring inclusivity, connectivity and the well-being of seniors within our communities.
