Jackie's Story
"I had no idea that your activities were for people like me."
"You hear the words #ageuk and there is a certain stigma which comes to mind. For anyone else who thinks the same, don't let your pride get in the way."
Jackie, 54, came into the Age UK Merton centre in February.
Jackie had recently been discharged from #stgeorges Hospital as an outpatient following 2 major surgical operations in October - 1 being a hysterectomy and the other a major knee operation.
Jackie explained that due to her younger age, she had lost the confidence in herself due to her surgery: “you don’t expect a person of my age to be having 2 major surgeries, including a hysterectomy . When I was younger, I didn’t think that I’d have any of these challenges. The last 2 years have been really difficult”
Jackie said that she was looking to improve her rehabilitation and mental stimulation by engaging her body in more movement-based activities with low impact.
Jackie found positivity in joining Age UK Merton's exceptional Yoga session on Tuesday afternoons, promoting healthy movement and mindset. She has since joined our regular Tai Chi sessions as her confidence has grown and rehabilitation has improved
Initially Jackie was hesitant to come into the Age UK Merton centre but has not looked back: “I can do much more than I could do 2 months ago, just because I feel a little better in myself”
Jackie has seen a massive improvement, not just in her physical recovery, but also her overall positive mindset. She has made many new friends and has found a great new rostra of activities
