Pension Credit: a background
Nationally, it’s estimated that over 850,000 pensioners do not claim pension credit that they are entitled to. Within our own catchment area, Manchester City Council, it’s estimated that around 8000 older people do not claim Pension Credit.
It’s thought that people do not claim for Pension Credit because they feel that there is a stigma attached to claiming for it. Additionally, some people may not be aware that they are entitled to this money.
When people reach an age where they can claim this money, which is 66, they have already contributed to UK economy by working all of their lives. It is therefore only fair that these people are aware of what support is available to them and that they do not feel ashamed of claiming for pension credit, rather that they have earned it after a long time spent working.
Furthermore, it’s particularly relevant that people are aware of what they are entitled to on account of the changes to the Winter Fuel payment; there is a time pressure on claiming pension credit, as people have until the 21st of December to claim for this money.
Claiming what’s yours
As you may well know, there have been changes to the Winter Fuel Payment meaning that some people’s incomes could be changed. While this may affect your income, you may be able top-up your income via the pension credit scheme.
Another upside to accessing Pension Credit is that there’s potential other support that are unlocked once you claim for it, such as housing benefit and a free TV license if you are 75 and over.
To be eligible for Pension Credit, you must be 66 or over and earn less than £218.15 per week if you are single, or £332.95 if you are in a couple.
You can apply for pension credit through HMRC’s website. However, many people find this a daunting process. That’s where our Information & Advice service comes in. The service is completely free for people who live in the Manchester City Council area. Our team provides a free benefit check, which will tell you what support you are entitled too. They can also support you with form filling to take the stress out of benefit applications.
