Age UK London’s ground breaking employment project, funded by the Big Lottery Fund, was set up to support people over 50 to find employment or set up their own business.
The recession led to people of all ages facing redundancy, unemployment and significant challenges to get back to work. People in their 50s and 60s can sometimes face specific barriers to finding a new job and figures show that older workers are finding it harder than their younger peers to return to work with fewer than 1 in 5 over 50s finding a job within three months, compared with more than 40 per cent of 25-34 year olds (ONS Labour Force Survey: quarterly redundancy tables).
Age UKs in Bromley, Camden, Islington and Redbridge provide tailored one-to-one support and workshops to enable people in later life to return to work, providing intensive individual support to help update CVs, write job applications and prepare for interviews.
The service is highly valued by clients, many of whom have been able to move into work, update their skills or become self employed, and increasingly Job Centre Plus has referred people to the project.
