Past Campaigns - A Wealth of Wisdom

Age UK London's October 2013 campaign, 'A Wealth of Wisdom', is all about celebrating older people's contribution to London.

Age UK London put together three London-wide events between 1-4 October 2013 under the theme 'Wealth of Wisdom', a week celebrating older Londoners’ contribution.

The three events were:

'Rivers of Life' Celebratory Event

Date: 1st October 2013

Time: 12.30pm - 3.30pm

Venue: Tottenham Living Room, 639 High Road, Tottenham, N17 8AA 

We organized a celebratory, intergenerational event, which we called ‘Rivers of Life’ as part of Age UK London’s ‘Wealth of Wisdom’ campaign.

The event was held at a prestigious, new, north London venue. It brought generations together in an informal setting to have a conversation about older people’s experiences and contribution to London. The participants reflected the diversity and individuality of older Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Londoners.

Older and younger people engaged in a conversation about experiences of coming to live in London revolving around family, community or professional activity etc. The younger participants depicted in theatrical or arts based ways the ‘River of Life’ picking up on any interests or passions that came to light and/or highlighted social, political and economic challenges that may well have been met.

The end result portrayed that which has made it possible for you to feel part of London’s community.

This event was organized by Age UK London in partnership with Age UK Haringey, Jackson Lane Theatre and Kori Arts. 

Media Event

Date: 2nd October 2013

Time: 5.45pm - 7.45pm

Venue: The Media Trust, 4th Floor, Block A, Centre House, Wood Lane, London, W12 7SB

Research conducted by Age UK London last year suggests that the biggest issue felt by older Londoners is the portrayal of older people in the media.

This event aimed to begin to engage with this concern, and make a first step in changing it.

Older people and media professionals met in a 'speed dating' style event. For half of the time, older people, many of whom will be members of organisations, were able to quiz the media professionals on how to get press coverage for their group. For the other half, the media professionals asked about older people's issues and how best to cover these stories.

Both groups garnered a great deal of knowledge and information from the event and it led to continued support when 'matches' were made.

Volunteering Event

Date: 4th October 2014

Time: 10.30am - 2.30pm 

Venue: vInspired Office, 5th floor, Dean Bradley House, 52 Horseferry Road, London, SW1 2AF

This was an intergenerational event which brought together younger and older Londoners to chat and work on the principle of 'make do and mend'. This workshop started with a discussion about the environmental and social impact of our modern throwaway culture and how things have changed from the 'make do and mend' generation. Many younger people today like to 'upcycle' anything from vintage clothes to tables and chairs and merging older people's knowledge with this modern trend will bring London's generations together. The discussion was followed by a practical, hands-on session.

Supporting Older People’s Contributions to London - Positive Ageing in London

Date: 17 October

Time: 10.00am-15.00pm

Venue: Salvation Army Community Church Hall, 1 Princess Street, London SE1 6HH (Elephant and Castle).

Positive Ageing in London held an event on 17 October 2013 looking at how to support and facilitate older Londoners’ contributions in the areas of employment, volunteering, informal care and grandparenting. With guest speakers from the GLA, Age UK and Centre for Policy on Ageing.
