Hospital Discharge Grant for Carers
If you are an unpaid carer looking after someone who lives in Leicester City and who has been discharged from the hospital in the past two weeks, and relies on your support to remain safe and cared for, you may be entitled to support from the Hospital Discharge Grant for Carers*.
The grant can support costs incurred in the two weeks following discharge including:
- Preparing home for discharge e.g. handyperson/removal of furniture
- Cleaning/housework in the cared for person’s home
- Carer’s additional travel expenditure associated with the hospital discharge when the carer is making these arrangements.
- Travel costs can include carer taking the person to outpatients’ appointments, picking up prescriptions and attending GP appointments with the cared for in the initial two weeks post discharge.
- Short-term sitting service for the cared for person to provide the carer with time to do any additional tasks post discharge.
- Carer’s loss of income due to taking time of work to facilitate the discharge,
- Extra childcare costs associated with the discharge process.
- Travel costs associated with the day of discharge such as, Petrol costs for carer or nominated family or friend.
- Contribution to one-off items of equipment that will support the carer e.g. a microwave to make meal preparation easier and quicker, laundry equipment.
*Please note this is a one-off grant for carers looking after individuals in Leicester city. Applications can be made within up to two weeks of the date of discharge.
