Age UK Kent Rivers run Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (COGS) Clubs for those living with mild to moderate Dementia, which provides support, stimulating activities and fun, as well as a chance to socialise with others.
What is Cognitive Stimulation Therapy?
Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is a short-term programme for people with mild to moderate Dementia, and is the only non-drug treatment recommended to improve cognition, independence and well-being by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
The sessions involve actively stimulating and engaging people whilst in a group setting. Whilst the day is focused around providing a supportive atmosphere and activities for clients, it can also provide respite for friends and family and can make caring responsibilities more manageable.
According to Dementia and Psychology specialists at University College London, the effects of people being treated with CST appear to be comparable with those treated with anti-dementia drugs.
How can I access this service?
People can be referred to COGS Club by a health professional, a carergiver or family member, or you can refer yourself. Please ensure that you have the person's permission before making a referral for somebody else.
