Voting at the London Mayoral Election
Published on 29 February 2024 01:17 PM
As you know 2024 is an election year, with not just one election but two likely! The timing of the general election is still under question, but we do know that the London Mayoral and Assembly Election will take place on Thursday 2nd May.
The Mayoral election is an opportunity for Londoners to vote on who will be the next Mayor of London for the next four years. This is a very important election for all Londoners as the Mayor of London’s responsibilities cover areas including transport, policing, housing, planning, adult education and the environment. You can find out more about the role of the Mayor here.
At these elections you will also be voting for Assembly Members, some of whom represent specific boroughs and others that represent the whole city. The Assembly Members are responsible for holding the Mayor to account, looking at his decisions and ensuring he delivers on his promises. You can find out more about them here.
Age UK London are currently working on their manifesto which includes our key ‘asks’ on behalf of older Londoners and they will share this in March. As part of their research, they recently came to speak to a group of Islington residents at a special edition of the Park Cuppa at Cally Clock Tower Centre to find out what was important to them.
In the meantime, don't forget to vote on 2nd May. You can find out everything you need to know about voting on the Age UK London dedicated website page. You can also find out about the candidates, how to vote by post and the need for a picture ID to vote - not just for the Mayoral election, but all elections. It's a good idea to check that you have the ID you need.
Every single vote counts and more older Londoners voting means that the issues that matter most to all of us are more likely to be considered by decision makers at City Hall.
